Hi friends!
As you probably know by now, I am an absolute bookworm. I have read over 100 books a year since 2012, and this year I’ve even made it over 120. Crazy, right? But if there is one benefit to my reading habit, it’s that when I say a book is a 2020 fiction favorite, that’s a big thing.
Keep in mind that 2020 fiction favorites isn’t a book published in 2020, but means that I read it in 2020. so some may be older, some may be newer. I personally don’t think it matters much, as long as I enjoy reading the book!
One of the best ways to read is with the Kindle unlimited app. For the price of only one book a month, you get access to millions! You can get a free trial to kindle unlimited right here, and if you’re a bookworm like me, there is no better way to save money. I know me and my house wouldn’t be able to support my reading habits if I’d had to get every book in physical copy, so this is the perfect solution!
If you’re more of an audiobook kind of person, you can also start your free trial of audible here, They’ll even send you a reminder before your 30-day trial ends, so you can cancel it on time if you want to.
So I dove into my goodreads list and picked out my absolute favorite books for you. I hope you love them as much as I do, so let’s get into it!

2020 fiction favorites
1. The longest holiday – Paige Toon
Laura has been married to the man of her dreams for seven months. But a week before the wedding, Matthew made a terrible mistake. Escaping the humiliation that is now her marriage, Laura is whisked off to Florida’s Key West by her best friend Marty. A carefree holiday full of cocktails and fun, surrounded by gorgeous, tanned men, is exactly what the doctor ordered.
Distraction comes in the form of sexy Cuban scuba diver Leo. Laura’s instant attraction to him knocks her flying, and she falls hard. As the end of the holiday approaches, Laura doesn’t want to go home. Is it time to face the music? Or is there more to Key West than a holiday romance?
The first of the 2020 fiction favorites is The longest holiday by Paige Toon.
Whilst there is a theme of infidelity in this book, I loved it so much I read it back to back. The story of Laura and Leo swept me off my feet, and put me right in their world. It’s by far one of the best romance/chick-lit books I’ve ever read and if you read one book off this list, let it be this one.
2. Then. Now. Always. – Isabelle Broom
Twenty-eight year old Hannah is ready for an adventure. She and her colleagues are in Spain for a month to film a documentary, and it’s a dream come true. Not least because Hannah will get to spend long summer days with Theo, her boss (and crush). If only Tom (Hannah’s best friend and cameramen) and Claudette (the presenter) would stop getting in the way…
Then things become even more complicated when Nancy, Hannah’s half-sister arrives. What on earth is she doing here?
For once in her life, can’t Hannah just have one perfect summer, free of any drama?
3. Breakfast at Darcy’s – Ali McNamara
When Darcy McCall loses her beloved Aunt Molly, she doesn’t expect any sort of inheritance – let alone a small island! Located off the west coast of Ireland, Tara hasn’t been lived on for years, but according to Molly’s will, Darcy must stay there for twelve months in order to fully inherit. It’s a big shock. And she’s even more shocked to hear that she needs to persuade a village full of people to settle there, too.
Darcy has to leave behind her independent city life and swap stylish heels for muddy wellies. Between sorting everything from the plumbing to the pub, Darcy meets confident, charming Conor and sensible, stubborn Dermot – but who will make her feel really at home?
4. In five years – Rebecca Serle
Dannie’s life is amazing. She has nailed the most important job interview of her career and has accepted her boyfriend’s marriage proposal. Everything is perfect.
Until one night she wakes up in a different apartment, with a different ring on her finger, and beside a very different man. Dannie spends one hour exactly five years in the future before she wakes again in her own home on the brink of midnight—but it is one hour she cannot shake.
4 years later she runs into the the same man, introduced to her as her best friend’s boyfriend. What is going on?
5. You can’t fall in love with your ex – Sophie Ranald
Thirteen years ago, Laura thought her life was over. Now, she’s nailed being a grown-up. Married to the gorgeous Jonathan, she has two wonderful (if high-maintenance) children and a free pass into the school-gate elite. So what if once in a blue moon she still daydreams about Felix, the man who broke her heart? After all, living well is the best revenge.
But then an unexpected encounter turns everything upside down.
How can Laura risk throwing away everything she has for a dream of the past?
6. The flatshare – Beth O’leary
Tiffy Moore needs a cheap flat, and fast. Leon Twomey works nights and needs cash. Their friends think they’re crazy, but it’s the perfect solution: Leon occupies the one-bed flat while Tiffy’s at work in the day, and she has the run of the place the rest of the time.
But with obsessive ex-boyfriends, demanding clients at work, wrongly imprisoned brothers and, of course, the fact that they still haven’t met yet, they’re about to discover that if you want the perfect home you need to throw the rulebook out the window…
7. Storm Glass – Jeff Wheeler
There is a reason that Amazon categorizes this as ‘epic fantasy’.
Theirs is a world of opposites. The privileged live in sky manors held aloft by a secretive magic known only as the Mysteries. Below, the earthbound poor are forced into factory work to maintain the engine of commerce. Only the wealthy can afford to learn the Mysteries, and they use their knowledge to further lock their hold on society.
Cettie Pratt is a waif doomed to the world below, until an admiral attempts to adopt her. But in her new home in the clouds, not everyone treats her as one of the family.
Sera Fitzempress is a princess born into power. She yearns to meet the orphan girl she has heard so much about, but her father deems the girl unworthy of his daughter’s curiosity.
Neither girl feels that she belongs. Each seeks to break free of imposed rules. Now, as Cettie dreams of living above and as Sera is drawn to the world below, they will follow the paths of their own choosing.
But both girls will be needed for the coming storm that threatens to overturn both their worlds.
8. Daisy Jones & The Six – Taylor Jenkins Reid
This book felt so real, I was looking for the bands’ songs on youtube for a solid 15 minutes before realizing it was all made up.
Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go-Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she’s twenty, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things.
Another band getting noticed is The Six, led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road.
Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.
9. The cafe by the sea – Jenny Colgan
Years ago, Flora fled the quiet Scottish island where she grew up — and she hasn’t looked back. What would she have done on Mure? It’s a place where everyone has known her all her life, where no one will let her forget the past. In bright, bustling London, she can be anonymous, ambitious… and hopelessly in love with her boss.
But when fate brings Flora back to the island, she’s suddenly swept once more into life with her brothers (all strapping, loud and seemingly incapable of basic housework) and her father. Yet even amid the chaos of their reunion, Flora discovers a passion for cooking — and finds herself restoring dusty little pink-fronted shop on the harbour: a café by the sea.
But with the seasons changing, Flora must come to terms with past mistakes… and work out exactly where her future lies…
10. Flora’s Lot – Katie Fforde
When Flora Stanza’s uncle dies unexpectedly, leaving her a 51 percent share in the family antiques business, it gives her the perfect chance to leave her glamorous but less than happy London life for the quieter life of the country. Unfortunately, her cousin Charles and his fiancée Annabelle don’t seem pleased to find Flora and her very pregnant cat on their doorstep.
Flora knows almost nothing about antiques, but with her London apartment rented out, her cat about to burst with kittens, and a mysterious man warning her about Annabelle, Flora has little choice but to accept her cousin’s offer to stay in their abandoned holiday cottage, miles from anything remotely like what Flora considers civilization.
Soon, though, Flora is fighting off dinner invitations from the devastatingly handsome Henry and hiding her eco-friendly lodger, William. Could it be that country life isn’t so dull after all?
